I just saw that Purple Rain was supposed to play at Pier 54 tonight. Did they postpone / cancel the screening due to the rain? Kind of funny how that happens. Know what’s even funnier? When I was a kid I saw Purple Rain in the theater with my Mom. Yeah, that wasn’t a good idea.

“Purple Rain” the movie is an oddball sort of movie that kind of feels ‘Rebel Without A Cause’-esque spackled over 80s nuances. However, the namesake song from the movie is forever ruined for me.

Last month I was in Amsterdam for a quick stay as part of an overall Europe tour with a group. Well being in Amsterdam, more specifically the Red Light district, we decided to partake in a sex show.

The “theatre” was set up like a small movie theatre minus the screen. The seats were the fold down kind and there was a velvet roped off area. It wasn’t as dark as you’d expect it to be, it was like the proprietor slid the dimmer a 1/4 of the way down.

The first song we heard when entering the show…”Purple Rain.” Just to make the mental picture more accurate, they don’t have “showings” like set times the sex show starts, it just continually goes from one act to the next. So when we walked in, the show was already well underway and half into the first “act” which was a white couple (I specify because there was later a black couple who did some incredible acrobatic moves) “performing” center stage on a rotating bed. The guy was gyrating into his partner (a girl—for the record) to the syllables in the chorus of “Purple Rain” and that image is associated with the song forever.

Oh they also played “Mmmm Bop” but don’t worry, it was used as an interlude song between acts. I assume this was because they wanted to keep the uptempo vibe going during the sexless viewing lull between acts.
